Iron Chef joins Meatless Mondays

As seen on The Huffington Post

It’s no secret that consuming less meat helps save the environment.   The Food and Agriculture Organization at the UN says that one fifth of the greenhouse gas emissions made by man are from the meat industry.  About 1800 gallons of water are used to produce one pound of beef.  There are countless other statistics.  To help combat the trend, Meatless Monday campaigns for Americans (and the world!) to take one day a week off of meat.  They have countless supporters including Al Gore, Paul McCartney, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, and Simon Cowell just to name a few.  Today a new star added his name to that list: Iron Chef Mario Batali.  Way to go Batali!  Check out his Meatless Monday logo below.

McDonald’s Announces Best Practices

McDonald’s has released the updated version of its Best Practices: The Road to Sustainability.  This report is a two-parter, one section on Best of Green and the other on Sustainability Supply.  The new document includes information on McDonald’s suppliers, employees and owner/operators.

Some highlights:

Happy Meals are being transported much more sustainably with the expanded use of a barge system, drastically reducing CO2 levels.

Swiss McDonalds are now recycling their organic waste, which is turned into supply truck fuel.  This saves about 10,000 litres of diesel a year.

FSB Foods supports employee wellness by encouraging voting.  They created the Citizen Vote Project, which helps inform employees on how to vote and holds mock elections.
