Gaming in Education

Why are boys being left behind in education?

Maybe they’re bored.  Maybe it’s because less than 1 in 10 elementary school teachers are male.  Whatever the reason, or maybe for all these reasons, Ali Carr-Chellman has a brilliant idea.  Why not use video games in education? Carr-Chellman, a third-grade teacher turned “instructional designer”, describes better games, decompressing curriculum, changing what we accept in education, and putting more funds behind educational gaming.

For the past four years the NBC Universal Foundation has been helping local communities by funding education efforts.  Over the course of the five year program, the Foundation will provide more than $6 million in grants towards education.  The support is more than monetary: last year NBC Universal employees donated over 10,000 hours of volunteer service.  This year NBC Universal has awarded $800,000, and six local institutions will be receiving a piece of the pie.

Even TV is into philanthropy

It seems everyone is getting into philanthropy, even fictional characters.  In the show LOST, Hugo Reyes uses much of his vast alternate-reality fortune (just go with it) to provide philanthropic support.  You can watch the episode here and see for yourself.  The script specifically mentions Hugo’s philanthropy towards parks, playgrounds, and hospitals.  In the episode, there are clear shots of new construction, an “experimental farm”, and kids standing in front of an elephant in the montage announcing Hugo’s award.  Even in the fictional setting, a philanthropist is honored with the, “Man of the Year” award.  Clearly philanthropy is an important part of our culture.  Interesting tidbit: during the slide show in the award ceremony, Hugo is shown with in a Humane Society shirt with a tiny Chihuahua.  Turns out that’s his dog in real life, her name is Nunu.  You can see some adorable pictures of her here.
